No. There is a pedagogical reason for this and an economical one.

• Pedagogically, the universally-accepted approach to teaching and learning melody-writing and harmony is to present the material in 4-bar systems. This highlights phrase-lengths, musical direction, natural resting points and cadences. The exercises in our workbooks are laid out to guide the students musically and visually. This approach will not be tampered with by us.
• Economically, if we converted the two composing workbooks to the new exam format, the cost would double, due to the doubling of the number of pages.

The new SEC layout was devised to accommodate online marking. We agree with the teachers who prefer to focus initially on the conventional layout, in order to instil a musical approach in their students. It makes sense that when students are on secure footing, they are then ready to tackle the new layout. This could probably take more than one academic year and many teachers may prefer to wait until 6th year before introducing the new layout.

We feel that exam techniques are an essential part of exam preparation. We will give PDFs of LC and JC Mock Exam questions in the new layout to our book customers, free of charge. Audio will be provided through our app and can be distributed to students if required. 

• Our JC customers (i.e. where ‘Tones’ is on the school booklist) will have the opportunity of using our JC questions.
• Customers using our LC Composing workbooks (i.e. where the Melody and Harmony workbooks are on the school booklist) will get LC Composing questions.
• Customers using our LC Listening workbooks (i.e. where the Listening and Core workbooks are on the school booklist) will get LC Listening questions, with audio access.
• Textbook customers (i.e. where the ‘Notes’ Textbook is on the school booklist or where a school is working from rented books) will get access to other resources.

• We intend to add extra questions to our reservoir of exam resources, so that our customers will have ample ‘new layout’ questions for 6th year students to work on exam techniques.
• We provided full LC and JC Mock papers in the new layout in 2021 and are happy to supply questions again, in accordance with SEC guidelines, in 2022.
